Overcoming anxiety is quite a challenging task if you don’t know where it comes from and why it is happening. It can strike at any time and it can be triggered by any thing, even past panic attacks. If you have no idea what is setting it off, you have little to no chance in surviving a panic attack unscathed. You need a deep understanding of this condition as well as the ways to prevent or treat it. Here are a few tips to help you fend off those panic attacks.

What actually happens during a panic attack?

In overcoming anxiety, your first step is to actually know what you are trying to overcome. These are feelings of intense fear or apprehension that usually doesn’t last for a long time but for those brief moments of anxiety, it’s like everything is closing in on you and you have nowhere to run and nowhere to hide. These few minutes are just its peak, though. The actual feeling of fear or apprehension can last for hours, leaving you a nervous pile of mess.

First Timers

People who experience panic attacks for the first time may find it jarring as it is known to feel like a heart attack or a nervous breakdown. Any person who is not familiar with these feelings will find severe anxiety a very uncomfortable part of their life and overcoming anxiety may seem to be impossible. But this is simply not the case. Anxiety can be overcome and panic attacks can be stopped. Even if your first panic attack is extremely upsetting or unbelievably frightening and it can even take days before you can fully recover from it, but always believe that it doesn’t always have to be that intense.

Treatment By Medication

Several medications are always available that will help you deal with anxiety. These antidepressants can keep you from breaking down into a state of fear and depression. You just have to consult your doctor about the best medication for you and follow their instructions faithfully. Do not rely on medications alone, though. Treating panic attacks also involves getting down and dirty with your behavior and the way you view things.

Treatment By Therapy

Overcoming anxiety also involves behavioral-cognitive therapy that exposes your fears and how you react to things. Knowing yourself this way gives you an upper hand when you are faced with your fears. Understanding why you fear certain things or situations will help you get over those fears faster. Basically, you have the power to beat anxiety.
